CONFERENCE THEME

The image of library is formed by many factors. Which of them will decide about the library future? Which of them will turn out to be unimportant, though today they seem to be very important? What new we can expect in libraries soon, and what can appear in dozen or so years? What kind of steps today should be taken towards in order to rise to the challenges of tomorrow? And finally, whom should we be, the librarians of the XXIst century?

Objective of the Conference organized by the Main Library of TUL is the attempt to make prognosis: how and for what should prepare themselves the librarians of today, in order to fulfill the requirements of users in a few or dozen or so years, with taking into account firstly the current trends in the development of information transmission and distribution technologies but also trends in the field of politics, social and cultural changes.

The basic questions, on which we hope the Conference will bring the answers are:

  • Whether and what kind of libraries will be needed in next 10-20 years?
  • What she/he will use the libraries for in the future?
  • What libraries and librarians have to do to be still needed in the future?

Proposed subjects include:

  • Factors influencing libraries in the perspective of 10-20 years from now
  • Required skills and abilities of librarians now and in the future
  • Cultural, social (sociological) and political changes and libraries
  • The Internet (also as a competitor to libraries)
  • Information overflow and 'overaccessibility
  • New technologies and sources of information and libraries
  • Range of collected materials in libraries (blogs, phone messages, etc...)
  • New generations of users (Amazoogle generation)
  • Legislation, freedom of exchange and the cost of information
  • Archiving and preservation of information (especially electronic)
  • Changes in organizational structures of libraries
  • Searching and selecting information; use of natural language for communication with the library/information systems
  • atterns of information behavior of users

Organizing Committee expects that Authors will present brave, ambitious and visionary approach to the theme and that their views will provoke the discussion of the Conference participants. Analysis of the current researches especially in the field of digital information creating and transmission (mobile telephony, blogs, electronic paper, interactive television iTV, portable devices) gives the great basis to the creative anxiety in the scope of the libraries future.
