About the Library – history and collections

The Library of Civil Engineering and Architecture began its existence as the Library of the Civil Engineering Department. It was established in 1970, from the merger of the book collections of 8 departments. Initially it was located in the construction pavilion in an area of 160 square meters. For almost 6 years it was administratively and financially subordinate to the Department while substantive care was exercised by the Main Library.

After reorganization, in September 1976, it was incorporated into the structure of the Main Library as a branch library. At that time, the collection of the Construction and Architecture Library numbered 28,499 volumes. In 1982, the Library was moved to the second floor of the building of the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning. After 27 years, in 2009, the Library again changed its location. The collection was moved to the ground floor of the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning building to a much smaller room which serves also as the Reading Room for Books and Periodicals.

Since January 2016, the Library occupies two rooms on the ground floor of the building of the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning. In the same year, on December 2, a ceremony was held to name the Library of Construction and Architecture after Jerzy Samujłło – the founder of the Architecture and Urban Planning Faculty at Lodz University of Technology.

The state of the collection as of 31.12.2023 is: 8 383 volumes of books 1 245 volumes of periodicals.
